New Hope's Zachary Herr took off some time from school work in Newtown to compete in the Innisbrook Easter Golf Classic in Florida, earning strong marks on his scorecard.
The 13-year-old carded rounds of 73, 78 and 75 for a 54-hole total of 226 at the 6,950-yard Island Course and 4th place finish in the boys' age 14-18 group. Players from 17 states and Canada were in the competition.
Richboro's Blayze DiPasquale was 45th on rounds of 86, 82, 82 for a 250.
Herr plays out of the Jericho National Golf Club, where he's a student of Dom DiJulia, and has fared well over the last two seasons in various regional and national tournaments. In January Herr finished 10th in the Doral Publix Junior Classic in the boys' 13-14 division after rounds of 74 and 75 for a 149 total. Germany's Alex Matlari won the event with a 144 total.
The youngster is ranked 29th among Pennsylvania boys in the Golfweek Magazine rankings, while DiPasquale is 36th. Newtown's Brandon Dalinka is 4th while Yardley's Tyler Yearley is 16th.
In the girls' competition at Innisbrook, Zach's sister Erica Herr placed 16th in the girls' division with a 45-hole total of 228 on rounds of 92, 91 and a 9 hole score of 45. She also played in the Doral event, finishing 6th in the age 11-12 division with an 80.
Both Zach and Erica Herr expect to play a full summer schedule, but circled and underlined on their calendar is the Zach Attacks Cancer Charity Golf Tournament slated for June 9 at Jericho National. The event benefits the Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Zach formulated the plan to help Fox Chase after his mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. He hopes to raise $50,000 to fight the disease, and has already sold more than 3000 green braclets to raise awareness for cancer. In addition to the tournament, a silent auction with outstanding items will be held at Jericho National that night.
Details of the event can be found at www.zachattackscancer.cfsites.org/ or by writing the Zach Attacks Cancer Foundation at 192 Brownsburg Road, New Hope, Pa. 18938. Comments (3)

I enjoyed this story about young Zach and his quest both on and off the golf course. Congrats on stellar rounds, but of more importance, your dedication toward helping the war on cancer. Keep up your good work.
