Notes, quotes and anecdotes from the world of Bucks County golf...oh, and how many golf courses are in Aruba?
Spring is just around the corner, which means the Golf Association of Philadelphia Team Matches will soon be gracing fairways. Yardley Country Club's squad returned to the playoffs, finishing behind champion Commonwealth National which won the overall title for the second time in three years.
Commonwealth's captain, Brett Diakon, was helped by the 2009 addition of nine-time Yardley men's champion Glenn Smeraglio to the lineup. The Newtown native fit right into the Commonwealth program, and earned 14.25 points in the winning championship day effort.
2010 will see 316 teams competing in various divisions of the Team Matches, representing a record 129 clubs. The matches are slated for April 18, April 25 and May 2 with the playoffs following. In addition to Commonwealth and Yardley, also in the final four last year were Overbrook and Huntingdon Valley....
Mike Laudien's bid to compete in his sixth PGA Tour event came up short in qualifying for the Honda Classic. Laudien scored a five-over-par 77 in qualifying and failed to earn a berth. He's played in the Westchester Classic, Buick Open and Greater Hartford Open in his career, and has also played in five Nationwide Tour events. Laudien, a Bishop Egan graduate, is a club professional in New York State. He's a former Middletown Country Club champion.
Steve Arnold failed to make the 36-hole cut in two egolf Tour events. Arnold scored rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149 at Palmetto Hall in South Carolina, then scored rounds of 73 and 81 for a 154 total at Savannah Quarters in Georgia.
In collegiate golf, Holy Ghost Prep grad Phil Bartholomew placed 54th in the Wexford Plantation Invitational for Elon University, carding rounds of 82 and 73 for a 155 total.
Senior Zach Smith (Doylestown) is expected to lead the St. Joseph's University Hawks into the William and Mary Invitational later this month. Also slated to compete are junior Patrick Devlin (Warminister) and sophomores James Bea (Southampton) and Andrew Jaskel (Bensalem).
